Duties and Responsibilities

  • Managing various sized projects, providing client relations and report to senior staff;
  • Designing and carrying out biological field investigations including breeding bird surveys, botanical inventories, Ecological Land Classification designation and field verifications, wildlife surveys (reptiles, amphibians, mammals, etc.) targeted species at risk surveys, fisheries assessments and wetland delineation following established protocols;
  • Reporting on a variety of topics pertaining to the natural environment and potential impacts of development for submission to regulatory agencies, including applying existing policy and criteria, making recommendations for best practice and industry standard mitigation measures;
  • Project planning, scheduling, allocation of personnel and resources, budgeting, overall supervision or project personnel;
  • Lead field studies, collect/enter/manage/analyze data and write technical reports;
  • Perform a variety of field and office tasks requiring the application of standard scientific principles and fundamental theories;
  • Conduct background information searches including literature reviews, database review and agency consultation to obtain environmental data;
  • Acquire environmental permits/approvals and develop mitigation and protection measures in accordance with environmental legislation and policy;
  • Preparation, review and presentation of reports and proposals;
  • Provide environmental site inspections and Contract Administration at active construction sites;
  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors in accessible and remote locations;
  • Actively grow the environmental business line by writing winning proposals, developing new client relationships and delivering excellent service to existing clients;
  • Mentor and develop junior staff on field survey protocols, data collection and technical report writing;
  • Keeping up to date with federal and provincial regulations pertaining to the natural environment that apply to job duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience, preferably in consulting, n field biology with emphasis on the ecosystems of Ontario;
  • Completion of a B.Sc. or M.Sc in Biology, Ecology or Environmental Studies;
  • Demonstrated experience completing Environmental Assessments and applying provincial and federal environmental legislation for private, municipal, provincial and federal projects;
  • Thorough knowledge of the Endangered Species Act (2007) and its regulations; ability to oversee species-specific surveys, determine habitat suitability and obtain government ministry and agency approvals as required;
  • Experienced with field survey protocols for birds, reptiles and amphibians, vascular plants and or fish;
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated experience writing technical and Environmental Impact Statements;
  • Proven experience providing project management, coordinating team members and ensuring top quality projects are delivered on schedule and budget;
  • Applied experience in biology, ecology, botany and natural science including identification skills for fish/birds/ other wildlife/vascular plants, wildlife identification skills and ability to delineate habitat types;
  • Experience in the collection, analysis and reporting of field data following established protocols;
  • Demonstrated experience with environmental inspection during construction, including erosion and sediment control;
  • RAQs qualified; Ecological Land Classification System certification; Ontario Wetland Evaluation System certification; Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol certification and other certification considered an asset;
  • Current St. John’s First Aid and CPR considered an asset;
  • Proficient with GIS (ArcGIS) and the use of GPS in the field and office;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.;
  • Valid Ontario ‘G’ driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
